Sonic’s 30th Anniversary Hype and New Releases

Sonics 30th Anniversary Hype and New Releases

Recently for Sonic the Hedgehog’s 30th Anniversary, I wrote an article about Classic Sonic called “A Review of Sonic Through the Years.” I was giving history on the original games and my personal opinions on them. Sega premiered a live stream on May 27, 2020, discussing their plans for the anniversary. Alongside a Sonic Colors Remaster, (more on that later), they also announced that they would be publishing a collection of all of the classic Sonic games called Sonic Origins. This is pretty exciting, but sadly we don’t know much yet about Sonic Origins besides the obvious, which would be that it’s a collection of the Classic Sonic games. We do know that Sonic 3 & Knuckles will have widescreen support, but it’s unknown for the others.

The Sonic Colors Remaster was a surprise to no one with it being leaked around six months ago, but none the less it’s still welcome. This remaster will have 60fps with widescreen support, which is awesome since it was a Nintendo Wii Exclusive. I thought that the game didn’t look much better in the trailer so I booted up my Wii to play Sonic Colors, and the differences are drastic. Sonic Colors definitely held up better in my mind. This game will be on all gaming platforms except PC. Not everyone had a Wii so this will be the first time a lot of people play it; in that regard, I’m excited. But if you’re like me and have already played the game, the remaster will not bring much more to the table besides visual enhancements.

Sega also announced that they will be making a TV show that is going to be a Netflix Exclusive. Not much is known about this project, but it’s said to be taking inspiration from the Archie comics. This show will have great minds behind it such as the creator of Ben 10 and a few others. Alongside the show for the Sonic Colors Remaster, they are making a two-part Miniseries story for Sonic Colors which is a surprise addition but nonetheless still cool.

Right as it was wrapping up, they announced a new game with a very lackluster trailer. Later that day, the name of the game got leaked as Sonic Rangers, which is thought to be a working title. This game is rumored to be an open world with inspirations taken from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild. I don’t know how well an open-world-style game will work with the blue blur, but it might be a step in the right direction for fixing the franchise.

This was a pretty cool Livestream, but it’s a shame so much of it has gotten leaked. Overall, I’m very excited for the 30th Anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog even through the ups and downs of the series Sonic will always be one of my favorites.
