Black Lives Matter is a popular movement that has started to attract more attention among America. Black Lives Matter (BLM) is an organization for the validity is black life, and work to rebuild the black liberation movement. The official platform for the movement, written on The Movement for Black Lives, says:

“Black humanity and dignity requires black political will and power. In response to the sustained and increasingly visible violence against Black communities in the U.S.  . . . have come together with renewed energy and purpose to articulate a common vision and agenda. We are a collective that centers and is rooted in Black communities, but we recognize we have a shared struggle with all oppressed people; collective liberation will be a product of all of our work.”

BLM has spread all over the country, even in our own school. Ashley Ridge Junior, Jasmine Tabor, says,”I have a lot of feelings about black lives matter, however, some of the things they’ve done can be contradicting. Black Lives Matter is a lot like the Black Panther movement, and represent “Black is Beautiful.” I think a lot more non-people of color need to understand the founders and objectors of movement and how they’re non-violent. We need to be an equal society.”

Black Lives Matter has had a lot of controversy on whether not it’s really needed. Kevin Jones, an Ashley Ridge Sophomore, says, “The biggest lie ever told is that there is racial equality in America.” So obviously the movement has importance to the people of America, and will continue to get support until their goal has been achieved.

In the summer of 2013, after George Zimmerman’s acquittal for the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, the movement began with the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter. BLM began as a response to the harmful racism that is apparent in our society. When the media showed more and more people of color getting murdered, the hashtag became popular among social media.

The BLM movement is so popular many websites sell shirts, sweatshirts, and other accessories that have Black Lives Matter written on them. If you’re interested in learning more about this organization, definitely check out their website!
