On Dick Clark’s Rockin’ Eve New Year’s Special, Mariah Carey was one of many performers on the show. However, her performance was probably the most memorable.

During her performance, there was a problem with her ear piece and she couldn’t hear the music playing. While on stage, Carey just stopped singing all together, and when her next song came on it was obvious to see that she was supposed to lip syncing. However, the problem didn’t end there. Carey’s performance turned out to be an even bigger controversy.

Carey’s team is blaming Dick Clark Productions,  saying the company “set her up to fail.” And Dick Clark Productions is firing back.

“As the premier producer of live television events for nearly 50 years, we pride ourselves on our reputation and long-standing relationships with artists. To suggest that DCP. . . would ever intentionally compromise the success of any artist is defamatory, outrageous and frankly absurd,” Dick Clark Productions said in a statement provided to CNN.

This response was brought on by Carey’s team that said Carey had already alerted Dick Clarke Productions that her ear peace wasn’t working during rehearsal. Carey’s publicist, Nicole Perna, made a statement saying that her client “was not winging this moment and took it very seriously. It was a shame the production set her up to fail.”

2016 was a crazy year filled with a lot of wild events and this unfortunate performance was a fitting way to end the year.
