The Amendments in the United Stated are not being changed anytime soon, and new Amendments are not being added every year. The last time I checked, each American citizen has the right to their freedom of speech as long as they live. So why are Hollywood actors and actresses being targeted for speaking out against the recent political agenda of President Trump and the Congress?

At the SAG Awards, multiple actors and cast used their acceptance speeches as a way to reach the public. The Stranger Things  cast won Outstanding Performance by Ensemble in a Television Series. David Harbou delivered a great speech on behalf of Stranger Things and in part said, “…we will [shelter outcasts] — those who have no homes — [and] we will get past the lies… and when we are lost amidst the hypocrisy and casual violence of certain individuals and institutions, we will as per Chief Jim Hopper, punch some people in the face when they seek to destroy the weak, and the disenfranchised and the marginalized and we will do it all with soul, with heart and joy.”

Actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus decided to also take a stand. “Because I love this country, I am horrified by its blemishes. And this immigrant ban is a blemish and it is un-American,” she stated. Dreyfus is the daughter of a French immigrant who fled Germany due to Jewish suppression by Nazi leaders.

People on social media have also spoke out against this. Users are saying that elite actors do not have the right to speak on these topics as they can’t possibly understand the life of the everyday American. While I agree that the life of a Hollywood actor may be more privileged than per say someone living in the South Side of Chicago, they have a right to speak out just as much as anyone.

Despite the backlash these actors are receiving, they continue to speak out and let their voices be heard. Many people and critics are looking forward to the Oscars this month and what the award winning actors and actresses will have to say. I agree with Hollywood and their recent stand on not letting others censor their speech.
