Marvel Creates First Lesbian Latina Superhero

Morgan Amos

Marvel has recently created a new superhero, America Chavez, who is shattering barriers in the comic book universe. She will be the first lesbian Latina superhero with her own Marvel comics series.

America Chavez, who also goes by Miss America, is 18 years old and has long curly hair. She often is seen wearing jackets that are starred and striped. She also attends Sotomayor University, and in between her classes she fights aliens.

She is starring in her own series, that was written by Gabby Rivera and art done by artist Joe Quinones The comic book series made its depute last month. This series features America alternately fighting evil villains and enjoying time with her friends.

America Chavez was created in 2011 by Joe Casey and Nick Dragotta, and has been a regular in Marvel’s Young Avengers and the Ultimates series.

Comic book fan, Brianna Jimenez, says, “You can’t call America Chavez a spicy Latina. She’s so strong and she’s a badass. She wants to help others and she’s doing her own thing”

America Chavez is also apart of Marvel’s push to become more diverse and inclusive. Over the past decade, fans have been introduced to the first Muslim Ms. Marvel; a female Thor; a young, female African-American Iron Man; and a new black Captain America. However, until now, a Latino character has never had their own Marvel series.
