The College Football Playoff needs a 8 team playoff to give respect to conference champs and group of 5 representative.

Today there is a 4 team playoff in college football. Just a few years ago in the BCS (Bowl Championship Series) era there was no playoff. Only two teams played each other in the “Championship Game” Obviously #1 and #2 teams at the end of the year.

This system led to less competition, and it would make it unfair for a real good team to get dissed. These obvious flaws are why we have today’s much glorified 4 team playoff. Could it be better?

The University of Central Florida (UCF) and Western Michigan argument:

In the 2017-2018 college football playoff regular season there ended up being only one undefeated team, UCF. Of course UCF isn’t in the four team playoff, because of strength of schedule (It’s a non-power 5 school). Here’s some stats that could allow UCF to get in especially in a fair 8-team playoff.

UCF – 1st in scoring offense (49.4 points per game)

7th in passing offense (339.3 per game)

5th in total offense and T2 in turnover margin (1.25+)

These are very high just because they are in the top ten in all of these categories. However, UCF isn’t even in the top 10. Yes, they do have a mediocre defense and a weak strength of schedule, but to go undefeated and have no chance of making the playoff is weird.

Being undefeated is the pinnacle of college football success. No matter what conference, power 5 or not being undefeated should at least give you a chance at the playoff. In this 4-team playoff with SOS (Strength of Schedule) and top 25 wins rated so heavily it doesn’t give teams like UCF and 2016 western Michigan a fair shot.

Western Michigan wasn’t able to prove themselves against Wisconsin last year in the bowl game, but what if UCF beats Auburn. Wouldn’t that raise some eyebrows? Questions? Auburn beat power house Alabama that happened to slide in the playoff at the #4 seed.

This year there was a legitimate argument between who will be 4 (in) and 5 (out). Ohio State and Alabama are two very good teams that have been powerhouses for many years. Two legendary coaches (Nick Saban and Urban Meyer) fighting it out to get in the playoff.

11-1 Alabama and 11-2 Ohio State which won the big ten championship. Let’s look at the two resumes. Sources for all of these stats come from cfbstats.com and teamrankings.com.

Alabama Resume

Total Offense- 465.5 yards per game 20th in the country.

Total Defense- 257.8 yards allowed per game 2nd in the country

Best wins: Louisiana State University (LSU), Mississippi State, Fresno State, Florida State (with a healthy team they are good)

Losses: Auburn

SOS (Strength of Schedule) 10th in the country.

Ohio State Resume

Total Offense- 523.6 yards per game 6th in the country.

Total Defense- 292.3 yards allowed per game 8th in the country.

Best wins: Penn State, Wisconsin, Michigan State.

Losses: Oklahoma, Iowa (By 31)

SOS (Strength of Schedule) 2nd in the country.

Both teams have really solid resumes. The committee decided that one loss Alabama would get the 4 seed leaving a really talented Ohio state team out. It was a tough decision between two really good football teams.

A statement from the SBNation was “When there are few true standout teams, does that mean more or fewer deserve a shot at the national title.”
