Today, many schools, specifically high schools, are allowing students to use their own personal cell phone to complete their classwork, but can phones really have an effect on a student’s education? Cell phone usage can have both a positive and a negative effect on grades. Here are the effects:

The positive effect that a phone can have on students is that they’re capable of organizing assignments for different classes and keeping track of their grades. If a student is struggling with a homework or classwork assignment, he or she can use the internet as a resource. Just by this, students will learn more and understand better with the information they have instantly received.

For negative effects, students can be easily distracted by their phone. Some students abuse their phone privileges by cheating on a quiz or test just to get a better grade for that class. However, phones are also being used to get on social media, texting their friends, taking pictures, or recording videos, which by the way is violating the school’s policies.

“A new study on student’s test performance and smartphones found kids who attend schools with smartphone bans did better on test-even more so if they were struggling academically before the ban was instituted.” , said http://www.scarymommy.com/how-cell-phones-affect-kids-in-school/

Phones can take away a student’s focus from getting an education. He or she tends to worry more about their life on social media than what they need to learn to prepare for college in their future. This is important because phones were just made to be able to contact others in case of an emergency, but now students, especially teens, are hooked by the media that could be less important.

Students should stay focused in school and save their social life for later. Education should be everyone’s top priority because school is a place to learn, not to be sitting in a classroom and text all day long. Colleges will look at students’ GPA to see where they’re at and what kind of students they are.

Students will have many opportunities to meet up with friends, but they won’t have an opportunity for something good for the rest of their life.
