La Carreta, a Mexican restaurant on Trolley Road, has closed voluntarily after ten people reported getting sick after eating there. An inspector from the Summerville Department of Health and Environmental Control says that the victims had a viral gastrointestinal illness.

This illness is very contagious, and can be spread by contact with another sick person, or by touching food/surfaces that have been contaminated. During the investigation, the DHEC recommended that La Carreta’s management do a deep cleaning of the restaurant, and send home any ill employees.

The sick customers suffered from intense vomiting and diarrhea. One of the victims, Amber Widener, says she was “violently ill for about twelve hours” (Live5News). Widener was a regular at the restaurant for about seventeen years, but says that if it reopens, she will not be going back. She stated, “I’m glad that it’s closed. We love the place. We hate to see that happen, but I just think that until they figure out what’s going on, what the source of it is, it’s just the safest thing to do.”

A manager from La Carreta says that one of the employees was sick as well, and they are doing everything in their power to address the issue (abcnews4).
