2019 Oscar Nominations and Predictions

Aliyah Dearing, Editor

On January 22, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released their annual list of Oscar nominations. This years Academy Awards sees a particularly diverse cast of movies, with Black Panther being nominated for a total of six awards, making it the first Marvel movie–and superhero movie–to be nominated for best picture.

Here are the nominated movies from all major categories and my predictions on who will win the coveted award.

Best Picture

  • Black Panther
  • BlackKklansman
  • Bohemian Rhapsody
  • The Favourite
  • Green Book
  • Roma
  • A Star is Born
  • Vice

My prediction: I am personally rooting for Vice, but it’s likely to go to either Black Panther or The Favourite.

Best Actor

  • Christian Bale-Vice
  • Bradley Cooper-A Star is Born
  • Willem Dafoe-At Eternity’s Gate
  • Rami Malek-Bohemian Rhapsody
  • Viggo Mortensen-Green Book

My prediction: I have rooted for Willem Dafoe every time he is nominated, even though I know he’s never going to win. The award will either go to Rami Malek or Bradley Cooper.

Best Supporting Actor

  • Mahershala Ali-Green Book
  • Adam Driver-BlackKklansman
  • Sam Elliot-A Star is Born
  • Richard E. Grant-Can You Ever Forgive Me?
  • Sam Rockwell-Vice

My prediction: Adam Driver.

Best Actress

  • Yalitza Aparicio-Roma
  • Glenn Close-The Wife
  • Olivia Colman-The Favourite
  • Lady Gaga-A Star is Born
  • Melissa McCarthy-Can You Ever Forgive Me?

My prediction: Olivia Colman, although Glenn Close has a solid chance of winning, too, since she already has six other nominations under her belt and no win.

Best Supporting Actress

  • Amy Adams-Vice
  • Marina De Tavira-Roma
  • Regina King-If Beale Street Could Talk
  • Emma Stone-The Favourite
  • Rachel Weisz-The Favourite

My prediction: Regina King.

Best Animated Feature Film

  • Incredibles 2
  • Isle of Dogs
  • Mirai
  • Ralph Breaks The Internet
  • Spider-man: Into The Spider-verse

My prediction: Spider-man will win by a long shot.

Best Original Song

  • “All the Stars”-Black Panther
  • “I’ll Fight”-RBG
  • “The Place Where Lost Things Go”-Mary Poppins Returns
  • “Shallow”-A Star is Born
  • “When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs For Wings”-The Ballad of Buster Scruggs

My prediction: I would like to see “Shallow” win, but there is also a chance “All the Stars” will take it.

Best Director

  • Spike Lee-BlackKlansman
  • Pawel Pawlikowski-Cold War
  • Yorgos Lanthimos-The Favourite
  • Alfonso Cuarón-Roma
  • Adam McKay-Vice

My prediction: Yorgos Lanthimos.

Best Adapted Screenplay

  • The Ballad of Buster Scruggs
  • BlackKklansman
  • Can You Ever Forgive Me?
  • If Beale Street Could Talk
  • A Star is Born

My prediction: I would enjoy to see If Beale Street Could Talk win, but I think A Star is Born as a bigger chance of winning.

Best Original Screenplay

  • The Favourite
  • First Reformed
  • Green Book
  • Roma
  • Vice

My predictions: Roma has a solid chance of winning, but I would like to see First Reformed win since it made practically nothing at the box office.

NOTE: Bo Burnham’s Eighth Grade is possibly one of the biggest Oscar snubs I have ever seen.

The 91st Academy Awards will premier February 24, 8:00 est on ABC.
