In 2013 the Kindness Rock Project was started by Megan Murphy who wrote “You’ve got this” on a rock and left it on a beach on Cape Cod. After a friend found it, she started leaving more rocks with inspirational messages behind which then started the trend!
The idea is very simple: people paint rocks bright colors or with short messages on them and hide them. It is better to hide them preferably in plain sight – so that people find them. A great idea for when you have nothing to do is to paint rocks. All you need is some paint and rocks! It’s a great way to spend time with people and create something.
There are ideas all over Pinterest and the internet. The idea behind this is that when people go for a walk and drive they will spot your rocks. When they find the rock it will say where it’s from on the back. This way people will rehide the rock and the cycle will keep going. Your rock can end up as far as Maryland or farther!
You will see people posting a picture of your rock on Facebook’s Summerville rock group to see who has it! According to the Kindness Rocks Project website, “the ultimate goal is to inspire others and spread kindness and positivity throughout the world. People have been coming together to paint, hide, and search for rocks which they then share through social media channels.”
