Review of Crybaby

Melanie Martinez is an American singer/songwriter who recently released her first full album Crybaby on August 14, 2015. It followed her EP Dollhouse which followed her elimination from The Voice, when she was down to the final six. Martinez has a very distinct style which is much like Lorde and Lana del Rey mixed with a toy piano and a children’s jack-in-the-box.

Songs like Mrs. Potato Head hit close to home while talking about women’s beauty standards in today’s society. The songs Dollhouse and Carousel, from her Dollhouse EP,  were featured on the album, along with the singles she released: Pity Party, Soap, and Sippy Cup.

With the theme of her album and music being whimsical and childish in contrast with the cynical lyrics really creates a tone for those who like the unordinary. Martinez’s voice is beautiful and her lyrics are so truthful that it hurts. If you’re looking for an album to gain inspiration from, this is it.
