Kim Davis: The Controversy

Kim Davis was thrown in Kentucky jail recently for denying marriage licenses to homosexuals. A viral video on the internet shows her expressing her religious rights, but also denying a homosexual couple their right to marry. This topic flooded the media because while she was definitely exercising her rights, she was also not giving other people their right to marry.

One side of the argument sees her as a martyr for using her religious freedom. In fact, as she walked out the jail doors to her freedom, she was greeted by a crowd cheering for her.

She made a speech saying, “Thank you all so much. I love you all so very much,” she said. “I just want to give God the glory. His people have rallied, and you are a strong people. We serve a living God who knows exactly where each and every one of us is at. Just keep on pressing. Don’t let down, because he is here. He’s worthy.” (CNN) She has also recently met the pope; Davis called it, “humbling” (NPR).
As for the other side of the issue, they see Davis as homophobic. Some media see it as manipulating her religious freedom to persecute a gay couple. Others have called her a hypocrite when they learned that she has been divorced five times, which is, in fact, a sin according to her religious beliefs. Many believe that she could’ve quit her job, so she didn’t have to cause anyone else pain or herself pain.

If she did quit, she would definitely be given a good reference, because she was the county clerk. County clerks run a lot more than everyday papers, in fact, they almost run everything. “The county clerk is responsible for filing vital records, or important documents related to a specific county’s population, including birth, death and marriage certificates” (PEOPLE).

Since Kim Davis has been released from jail, she has returned to her job and still refuses to give out marriage licenses to same-sex couples. This, of course, doesn’t stop her co-workers. The state’s governor, though, thinks “there is just no need to waste hundreds of thousands of dollars of taxpayers’ money” by calling a special session.
“If you want to change the way licenses are issued, … they’re free to do so,” Beshear said of changes that could be made starting in January. “But I just don’t see the urgency now.”(CNN).
