Caitlyn Jenner Decides to Oppose Transgender Athletes in her Run for Governor of California

On May 1, 2021, Caitlyn Jenner went on TMZ for an interview.  She is running for Governor of California and wanted to spread the word through interviews.  (USA Today)  During the interview, she was asked about the issue of trans people competing in sports.  Jenner, specifically addressing boys who transitioned to girls, said this:  “That’s why I oppose biological boys who are trans competing in girls’ sports in school. It just isn’t fair. And we have to protect girls’ sports in our schools,”.

This has been an issue in support for Jenner, because despite her being trans people do not agree with her opinions on trans issues.  Trans activists instead have voiced support for Jenner’s opposition, governor Gavin Newsom, who is the current governor of California.  (CBS)  Even after the backlash Jenner would not retract on her statements Tweeting, “I didn’t expect to get asked this on my Saturday morning coffee run, but I’m clear about where I stand. It’s an issue of fairness and we need to protect girls’ sports in our schools.”

So it makes sense that more trans people will support Newsom in the election, even if he does not have personal experience as a trans person.  He has made it clear he will not pass a bill prohibiting trans people from playing in sports.  But there is still a chance that Caitlyn could win.  If she does, it will mean a change in California policies, and probably in more areas than just trans rights.

California is deeply democratic, and the republican Jenner will certainly shake things up if elected.  She wants to lower taxes and make Covid restrictions less restrictive.  (Axios)  She has also decided to stay away from Trump on a few issues, as one of her advisors said, “Certainly she has not seen eye-to-eye with [Trump] on a lot of things,” the adviser said. “I think that Caitlyn will talk to anyone, Democrat or Republican. Donald Trump is not going to be the deciding factor for the state of California.” This might be the right choice in trying to be elected in a democrat area.

Either way, rer statement on trans people in sports will have lasting effects on Jenner’s career.
